What are 2 things going the way of dinosaurs…..The answer please…Straws and plastics bags.
And while a straw may sound trivial, in the US alone 500 million straws are used a day. Straws are considered too flimsy to recycle and it is estimated that by 2050, we will have more plastic in the ocean than fish.
What’s wrong with plastic?
Well plastic never really biodegrades but breaks up into smaller particles. Many of these particles like bisphenol A (BPA) pose a health hazard to humans and other animals. BPA has been linked to cancer, diabetes and endocrine disorders even in small amounts and is called a hormone disruptor. YIkes.
Good news is that there are alternatives
- Reusable bags instead of plastics – Often this bags are sturdy and distribute the weight better
- Paper straws, Bamboo straws, metal straws – These alternatives are good for the environment but also good for your health because it limits your exposure with BPA, the harmful carcinogen and endocrine disruptor found in plastics.
